Do wineries in Épernay produce non-sparkling wines?

That’s a great question! Even though Champagne is, of course, famous worldwide for its sparkling wines, the region also produces what’s called Coteaux Champenois. These are still wines — either red or white — made from the same grapes as Champagne.

They’re much rarer, and only a handful of producers make them each year. If you’re curious to taste something different, it’s worth asking during a visit, because some winemakers will have a small production of Coteaux Champenois available alongside their Champagne.

I also suggest contacting some smaller champagne houses and local winemakers in Hautvillers or Ay-Champagne to explore more intimate tasting experiences.

Coming to Champagne is an excellent idea for celebrating a birthday—probably the best one!
Taking the train is a good option, but if you’re traveling with several people, you might want to consider hiring a private driver for the round trip.
