Discover the best blind tasting in Champagne Region

Today will focus exclusively on the Champagne houses that offer a blind tasting.

I underwent training in wine tourism in Champagne, and one of the best parts was the tasting sessions! However, we participated in several blind tastings which clearly challenged us a bit. Some sessions required identifying the correct Champagne among various sparkling wines, while others focused on discerning sugar levels, different grape varieties, and aging processes. The latter were particularly tough but equally very interesting.

What is a blind tasting in Champagne?

A blind tasting in Champagne is a unique and engaging way to deepen your appreciation for Champagne, its aromas, grape varieties, and the factors that influence what’s inside the bottle. It’s open to everyone and offers a fantastic sensory experience. Blind tastings challenge your palate by making you identify differences between Champagnes that can be subtle at times. However, these differences become much more noticeable and sharp when you actively seek to discover what you’re tasting. Plus, you retain much more information about each Champagne.

Participating in a blind tasting is also interesting because it often doesn’t cost much more than a regular tasting and is definitely more fun! Here’s a little tip: before you go, make a bet where the loser buys the next bottle of Champagne for the aperitif! Yes, I love to play!

All the Champagne houses offer their own wines, which they know and master perfectly, ensuring that every tasting experience is both enjoyable and educational.

Curious to give it a try? Here are some Champagne houses that offer this Champagne experience — each with their own style.

Blind tasting at Champagne Vollereaux

Blind tasting in Pierry – Champagne Region

I’ve already experienced a blind tasting at Champagne Vollereaux, and I absolutely love this house, which has been offering tours for a long time. Aurore has done an excellent job with the cellar tours—they are fun and interesting, and you can see that the house is both family-run and cooperative, which is incredibly fascinating. The tasting area is superb, and they have recently transformed an old vendangeoir (a former harvest area on the property) into a dedicated blind tasting space. I highly recommend visiting with your eyes closed, but I must admit, I’m not a fan of dad jokes (at least, not out loud!).

Similar to Vollereaux, I encourage you to check them out. Their blind tastings are incredibly engaging, featuring three different wines, various grape varieties, and aromas to identify!
