Autumn in Champagne

Champagne in Autumn is like diving into an ocean of warm, comforting colours, immersing yourself in landscapes that fill your senses and that never cease to amaze you.

When the sparkling vineyards put on their autumn coat, nature still offers us beautiful sunny days with mild temperatures, and this is why it is Sarah’s, your host and blogger, favourite season.

Because we delight in sharing with you the best programs to discover the Champagne area in Autumn, we also welcome you to our apartments in the heart of Epernay

Why trust us? Romain is a true Sparnacen who knows the wine region like the back of his hand, and Sarah fell in love with Champagne at the same time as her husband.

This passion for the Champagne area has led us to open apartments just a few steps from the Avenue de Champagne, Epernay, to welcome you, meet you and spend a friendly sparkling moment with you.

This time, we invite you to come to this beautiful part of France in Autumn to discover Epernay and its region in a season we love. We bet you will love this time of year as much as we do.

Are you wondering when to come to Champagne? In this article, we give you all the best reasons to book your stay here in Autumn!

Cellar visit and tasting

Visiting a wine cellar is a must during a stay in Champagne, with so much to discover. The history of this sparkling drink, the history of the Champagne region, as well as the process of champagne making from the fruit seeds to the bottle.

Epernay and Reims are the two unofficial capitals of Champagne and are two ideal cities to discover the province and its wine and sparkling riches.

We suggest you discover the most beautiful wine cellars in Epernay. Have you booked a stay in Reims? The hardest part will be choosing which sparkling cellars to visit! We have put together a top 5 list of the most beautiful wine cellars to visit in Reims

To understand the history from two different points of view, we advise you to visit a well-known Champagne House cellar and one of the small independent winegrowers. Indeed, it is the occasion to discover the history of champagne under two facets, with different explanations that complement each other perfectly.

The visits end, the night falls, and the temperatures drop. Why not finish the day in warmth?

Let’s go to a cosy and warm tasting bar to end this autumn day in style, where you can warm up and enjoy a bottle of the best sparkling champagne.

An address not to be missed! Located at the gates of the Avenue de Champagne, Les 3 Domaines is one of the best wine bars not to be missed during your stay in Epernay.

The tasting menu is a selection of local sparkling champagnes bottled by Baptistine Boivin, Cyril Janisson and Vincent Testulat, the three winegrowers from Epernay who welcome you to this wine bar.

Do you want to taste a sparkling bottle of a winegrower? Les 3 Domaines is the ideal spot in Epernay to discover local wines from small producers for a change from the sparkling vintages offered by the big Champagne Houses.

Which Champagnes to taste at Les 3 Domaines ? Champagne Boivin, Champagne Janisson Baradon et Fils and Champagne V Testulat are on the tasting menu.

Much more than a simple champagne bar in Epernay, we invite you here to enter a cosy place, to spend pleasant moments in a superb room decorated with taste and offering a beautiful high ceiling. Without a doubt, we feel good at Les 3 Domaines, and even more so after the autumn days provided by October and November.

We have a sweet tooth (we’re sure you do too), which is why we really enjoyed the few sweet and savoury dishes on offer in conjunction with the sparking tasting, and even more so because local artisans make them.

The little extra at Les 3 Domaines is the little shop where you can find only products from the wine region, as well as the bottles of champagne on the tasting menu.

Info: The change of season means a difference in the opening hours of the cellars, the houses and the tasting rooms! Our advice? Remember to call before you go, as the timetables found on the websites may be different. Because if Autumn brings its share of rejoicing, it is also the time when the days get shorter.

If taking advantage of the views of the vineyards is an essential step all year round, admiring the hillsides in their autumnal dress is even more so, as it is a real eye-opener!

For us, it is a must to discover Champagne, as the beauty of the hillsides takes on a marvellous dimension during the Autumn.

In addition to visiting the vineyards, you will enjoy an excellent patchwork of yellow, orange and red tones that tend towards that brown colour of autumn leaves.

Where to enjoy the vineyards of Epernay and its surroundings? Climbing to the top of the mountains or enjoying a drive along the small country roads is one of the best ways to enjoy the views of the vineyards.

And if you want to take a high view of the valley, go to the Epernay captive balloon for a flight at 150 m high in the sky of Sparnac. You will leave with a lot of sentiments and beautiful memories.

If you prefer to be guided through the vineyards, we recommend a tour in an “estafette” at My Vintage Tour in the company of Maeva and Romain. It’s a unique and unforgettable experience.

Nature being generous with us, the vineyards start to change colour at the end of September, before offering us this show during October and November, the period when you will want to come to Champagne

What we love is the variety of colours covering our fruit and vines, but above all, the way in which Autumn settles on the hillsides, with a different patchwork every week.

For if some leaves turn from green to red quickly, others slowly transform through several stages, offering a landscape that changes from day to day, and what a spectacle we have in front of us every morning!

Walking in the forest

This is undoubtedly our favourite time of the year for family walks in the forest, for the beauty of the landscape with the autumnal colour gradations dressing the trees, and because the autumnal walks around Epernay are always the best memorable moments for us.

In addition, the wine region in October and November becomes a perfect playground for children, who love the mountains of leaves that welcome them to roll around, play hide-and-seek and many other games.

Our favourite is the Hautvillers forest

In addition to offering you a wonderful moment in touch with nature, a walk in the forest at Hautvillers is also an opportunity to discover this small village classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Take advantage of the many small informative panels describing the forest’s seeds, fauna, and flora. It is an opportunity to share a playful moment. We have to admit that we love these activities for our children, and they too ask for more every year. They are the first to put on coats and run to the forest with a big smile on their faces.

Nature lovers can also go to the plateaux of the Montagne de Reims, where the landscapes in Autumn offer beautiful surprises.
